NDC Greater Accra Organiser Anthony Nukpenu Questions Authenticity of Viral Videos Amid Ablekuma North Rerun Violence Claims
The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has raised serious doubts about the authenticity of several viral videos circulating online that purportedly depict acts of violence during the recent Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun. Speaking on Asempa FM’s popular political program, Ekosii Sen, Mr. Nukpenu urged the public to exercise caution before accepting all visual content as factual.
Doubts Over Viral Videos and Alleged Violence
While acknowledging that some incidents of violence during the rerun were regrettable, Nukpenu questioned the accuracy and origin of certain footage spreading on social media platforms. He warned that some videos might be exaggerated or even manipulated using advanced technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), creating a distorted narrative of the situation.
“The attacks must be condemned, but I am happy that there were no gunshots or deaths. It must be on record that the thugs are not from NDC stock. They could be from the NPP because, in politics, when you disappoint people, they can turn against you. But some of these incidents are being exaggerated and could have even been generated through AI,” Nukpenu remarked.
His comments underscore growing concerns about misinformation during politically sensitive times, especially as the country grapples with the fallout from a contentious electoral rerun.
Response to Assault on Former MP Hawa Koomson
Mr. Nukpenu also addressed the reported assault on former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, which shocked many across the political spectrum. He revealed that he personally met and interacted with Hawa Koomson, along with other political figures such as Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku and Political Aide to the Vice President, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, at the Methodist Church polling station where the incident allegedly took place.
Expressing sincere sympathy and regret, Nukpenu stated that the NDC plans to visit Madam Koomson to offer condolences and issue a formal apology over the unfortunate event.
“It was a shocking development to all of us. We want to extend our sympathies and ensure that such acts do not tarnish the political process,” he added.
Call for Thorough Police Investigation and Justice
The NDC organiser further voiced optimism that the Ghana Police Service will conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation into all reported incidents of violence. He emphasized the need for swift action to identify and prosecute those responsible for any unlawful behavior during the rerun process.
“We believe the police will do their part in ensuring justice is served. Maintaining peace during elections is paramount to the integrity of Ghana’s democracy,” Nukpenu affirmed.
Background: The Ablekuma North Parliamentary Rerun
The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun has attracted nationwide attention following prolonged disputes over the results of the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election. The Electoral Commission (EC) ordered a rerun at 19 polling stations in the constituency after irregularities were found, including missing endorsements on ballot papers and reports of procedural breaches.
This decision reignited political tensions in the area, drawing scrutiny from political parties, civil society, and the general public. Both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC actively campaigned during the rerun, with heightened security presence at polling stations aimed at preventing violence and ensuring a transparent electoral process.
The Importance of Accurate Information Amid Political Tensions
Mr. Nukpenu’s comments highlight the ongoing challenge of combating misinformation in Ghana’s electoral landscape. As political events unfold, the spread of manipulated or misleading content threatens to undermine public trust and escalate tensions unnecessarily.
He encouraged citizens and the media alike to verify information before sharing or reacting to videos and reports related to the rerun.
“We must all be responsible consumers of information, especially during sensitive times like elections. Let us wait for verified facts before drawing conclusions,” he urged.
